Questions covered in this guide
Confirm the replacement first
The Texas Department of Insurance advises keeping the current policy until the new policy or written proof of coverage is available. A saved quote is a useful comparison document, but it should not be your only handoff record. Ask the new insurer to confirm exactly what has been issued and when it takes effect.
Put the dates on one line
TDI identifies the policy period and effective date among declarations-page details. Create a timeline showing the proposed start and the requested end of the old coverage, including the stated time where available. Ask the insurers to resolve any mismatch. Record the covered vehicles, drivers and intended use alongside the dates so the handoff review includes what is insured, not just when a payment is due.
Follow the cancellation instructions
Request the existing insurer’s cancellation procedure and keep the written request and confirmation. Ask what happens to scheduled payments, any remaining balance and any refund; do not assume those are all settled by turning off automatic payment. Give any lender or other interested party the documents it requests. Keep a small handoff folder with the issued policy, proof of coverage, insurer contacts and final cancellation confirmation.
Compare the financial change separately
Use the rate increase calculator to put old and new premiums on the same annual basis. Mark changes in limits, deductibles, vehicles or drivers before interpreting the difference. Keep one-time charges, unresolved refunds and payment-plan details beside that comparison so a single annualized number does not hide the transition costs. The calculator does not bind coverage or cancel a policy. After the change, check that your documents and account confirmations match the intended dates and coverage, and ask the responsible insurer to correct discrepancies. State rules and policy procedures can differ; this is a handoff checklist, not a universal cancellation deadline.
Putting it into practice
The handoff folder and shared timeline make issuance, cancellation and payment administration separate verifiable steps. Annualized premium comparison remains useful, but transition charges and refunds stay outside any claimed like-for-like savings.
